While reading around the subject of Jesus saying:

“You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”
(Luke 12: 56)

I picked up this book off my bookshelf: The Present Future: Six tough questions for the Church by Reggie McNeal.

Wow! Well there’s an author who doesn’t miss with any of his punches! It’s a book written with courage, insight, humour, honesty, a passion for Jesus Christ and a desire to see the Church move beyond its seeming current obsession with preserving the current status quo and moving towards being a powerful missionary movement: to face the future with imagination and courage.

While his focus is on North America, I’m quite sure that the picture McNeal paints in broad brushstrokes about the “current church culture in North America” can equally be said about the church here in the UK, if I understand correctly what the likes of John Drane have been writing about the situation this side of the Atlantic.

New reality #1: The collapse of the Church culture

Here’s what McNeal says on page one of chapter one:

The current church culture in North America is on life support. It is living off the work, money, and energy of previous generations from a previous world order. The plug will be pulled either when the money runs out (80 percent of money given to congregations comes from people aged fifty-five and older) or when the remaining three-fourths of a generation who are institutional loyalists die off or both.

Please don’t hear what I am not saying. The death of the church culture as we know it will not be the death of the church. The church Jesus founded is good; it is right. The church established by Jesus will survive until he returns. The imminent demise under discussion is the collapse of the unique culture in North America that has come to be called “church.” This church culture has become confused with biblical Christianity, both inside the church and out. In reality, the church culture in North America is a vestige of the original movement, an institutional expression of religion that is in part a civil religion and in part a club where religious people can hang out with other people whose politics, worldview, and lifestyle match theirs. As he hung on the cross Jesus probably never thought the impact of his sacrifice be reduced to an invitation for people to join and to support an institution.

Powerful, challenging but also exciting stuff. As fearful as I was about the Luke 12 passage a couple of days ago, I’m now going to look forward to putting this sermon together in the next couple of days.

Under fire

I’m preaching this coming weekend at Newport-on-Tay (Fr David‘s old stomping ground).

Preparation has started already … I don’t have the luxury of being able to write sermons during the day any more, sadly. And I’m supposed to be in Selkirk on Saturday helping Mum, so even my ‘safety day’ has gone.

I can’t even “recycle” an old sermon for that Sunday as I’ve never preached on that Sunday before (Pentecost 12) — I know: I’ve checked. And my word! it’s not as if it’s an easy passage to preach about either. Have a read:

The Gospel according to St Luke 12: 49-56

  1. “I’ve come to start a fire on this earth–how I wish it were blazing right now!
  2. I’ve come to change everything, turn everything rightside up–how I long for it to be finished!
  3. Do you think I came to smooth things over and make everything nice? Not so. I’ve come to disrupt and confront!
  4. From now on, when you find five in a house, it will be– Three against two, and two against three;
  5. Father against son, and son against father; Mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; Mother-in-law against bride, and bride against mother-in-law.”
  6. Then he turned to the crowd: “When you see clouds coming in from the west, you say, ‘Storm’s coming’–and you’re right.
  7. And when the wind comes out of the south, you say, ‘This’ll be a hot one’–and you’re right.
  8. Frauds! You know how to tell a change in the weather, so don’t tell me you can’t tell a change in the season, the God-season we’re in right now.

Prayers please

So your prayers please for me this week as I wrestle with the passage, and that I hear from God the right thing to say to the congregation in Newport. Pray that I may know how to interpret the present time!

Ascension Day

I came across this image of a calloused hand holding a small metal cross about eight years ago on the cover of the X-Fest official programme in Kerrang! magazine. It’s from a photograph of Bill Ward — the drummer from Black Sabbath — hand holding his Black Sabbath cross.

Father and Son

But there is something about this image that speaks to me of God the Father’s relationship with Jesus, God the Son. The photograph speaks to me of God the Father holding Jesus, the crucified, resurrected Christ. And the calloused hands of God the Father demonstrating that Jesus’s experience of death and resurrection have had a profound and lasting effect on God the Father.

God the Father does not sit in heaven, stoically unaffected by the death and resurrection of Jesus. Paradoxically God the Father is right there in the middle of the experience of the death and separation of God the Father from God the Son. “My God, my God why have you forsaken me?!” The reciprocal call of Son to Father, of Father to Son. God the Father is right there in the middle of the resurrection, the restoration of life, of hope, of healing.

The Crucified God

Jürgen Moltmann in The Crucified God writes

When the crucified Jesus is called the ‘image of the invisible God’, the meaning is that this is God, and God is like this. God is not greater than he is in this humiliation. God is not more powerful than he is in this helplessness. God is not more glorious than he is in this self-surrender. God is not more powerful than he is in this humanity.

The nucleus of everything that Christian theology says about ‘God’ is to be found in this Christ event. The Christ event on the cross is a God event.” (p.205)


Today is Ascension Day, the day that the Western Church remembers Jesus returning to God the Father and taking his humanity into heaven As it says in the Scottish Episcopal Church‘s 1982 Eucharistic Prayer:

In Christ your Son our life and yours
are brought together in a wonderful exchange.
He made his home among us
that we might forever dwell in you.

A further demonstration of how much God loves us: God became human, that we might become divine.

Sermon – Taking Stock

For some, Lent may feel like walking through a desert.

On Sunday I was presiding and preaching once again at the church of St Mary, Newport-on-Tay. I began the service by saying

During this week there has been a lot in the news about how dangerous it is to drive while using a mobile phone.

Well, this morning I think I’ve found something even more dangerous.

It was Jane turning to me, just after we passed through Dunino [about 6 miles from Anstruther] and asking “Have you got your robes?”

Twenty minutes later I was passing the spot I’d done a three-point-turn and once again en route for Newport-on-Tay, arriving with only seven minutes to go before the service began. Phew! That was close.

Here is my sermon:

Year C – Lent 3 – Psalm 63: 1 “Taking Stock”


When I graduated from St Andrews in 1993 I moved back home to my parents’ home in Selkirk, and worked in a textile mill (which, like many mills in the Scottish Borders, now no longer exists) in which I had also worked during summer vacations.
It wasn’t the most glamorous of work, even though our end products would be shipped off to big designer names, such as Donna Karan New York, Yves Saint Laurent and the like. In fact, to be honest, I was often terribly bored.

For the most part of my 18 months there I was a stocktaker in the yarn store — I was the stocktaker in the yarn store. Although I preferred the title “Yarn Store Asset Management Operative and Spacial Efficiency Co-ordinator”. (I counted stuff and tidied up!)

My job—you may not be surprised to discover—consisted of finding out how much yarn we had, of each type and colour, and shade, and batch. In a building that was about 15 times bigger than this one!


My daily task consisted of the same 10 actions:

  1. Empty a store box of cones into a cardboard box
  2. Transport the cardboard box to the scales
  3. Empty the box on the floor
  4. Separate the contents into its various colours and batches
  5. Weigh each colour and batch separately
  6. Write a ticket for each batch
  7. Wrap the ticket around one of the cones
  8. Enter the details on the stock sheet
  9. Load the cones back into my cardboard box
  10. Transport them back to the store box

And then start all over again with another box… and again … and again …

I sometimes had help, like the time I got my cousin a job there. He sorted the cones and weighed them, I wrote the tickets and filled in the paperwork.

After two weeks — two weeks! — he confided in me that he was colour-blind.

After that I sorted the colours, he wrote the tickets.

So if you have ever bought anything from DKNY or Yves Saint Laurent which claimed to be green and is actually red then you can blame my cousin Colin!


I spent over eighteen months in that job. Day after day doing much the same thing. Much of it was mindless, or repetitive, or mindless and repetitive.

At times I really resented being there: I was a would-be ordinand, this wasn’t in my plan. I’d done what was required of me: I’d been to university and gained a fairly decent degree in Practical Theology and Christian Ethics and now I was being told to wait. How unfair was that!

I was periodically seeing the Director of Ordinands and he was telling me to wait. And not just for a couple of weeks, or months: wait for three or four years! He told me to find work in some area of youth-based social work, I couldn’t find a job locally in “youth-based social work” so I continued to take stock (in every meaning of the word).

After about a year of stocktaking yarn I was getting incredibly angry at God. What did He think He was doing?! He knew I had a calling to the priesthood: He’d called me for goodness’ sake! So why was I stuck in this dead-end job, doing nothing about my calling?

It was only much later that I realised that God was preparing me: God was teaching me patience. God was teaching me endurance through suffering, in what seemed like an endless desert. And most importantly God was teaching me to seek Him in the midst of everyday life. God could only do that when I was not distracted by anything else, when I had to trust Him for everything. I had spent all this time taking stock of yarn, but not taking stock of the really important things in my life.

My mistakes

The mistake I was making was that I wanted my life of faith to be glamorous and heroic: a proud struggle against the powers of darkness, against temptations of the flesh, heroically being called out of ordinary life into an ordained life.

Live our lives

What God showed me during that time, is simply the importance of our ordinary everyday lives; the importance of living our lives; that is, being attentive to who we really are — not looking ahead to some perceived better future, where the grass looks greener — but acknowledging who we are before God, not who we feel we want to be, not who we think others expect us to be, but who we really are now (faults and all) — fully inhabiting the space I am living in right now, and being attentive to where God is already at work there.

Lent – take stock

So, here we are in the Third Sunday in Lent: that built-in period of six weeks in the Church’s year which specifically gives us the opportunity to take-stock of our lives before God, in a way which is shared and supported. For many it can be a desert experience: it can be an uncomfortable experience to simply sit with ourselves and realise that we don’t really know who we are, not entirely, and that there are aspects of our character and temperament which both surprise and even frighten us,
and that we don’t really know who God is, and that there is something hidden deep inside us that wants to rebel against God.

Taking stock of one’s life begins with an honest confession of who we are, a painful realisation, perhaps, that who we are now is not who we want to be.

Wanting to want to pray

I have found the writings of a Benedictine monk very helpful as I have been exploring this. Brother Mark Barrett OSB writes:
My first teacher in the monastic life used to say that he prayed that he might “want to want to pray”. He goes on:

When I was a student for the priesthood, a wise theologian showed me that, in a very important sense, I do not want God.

This is the only honest place from which to begin: we don’t actually want to begin at all. We do not wish to engage in what [Saint] Benedict calls the ‘labour of obedience’ (Rule of St Benedict Prologue). The process of facing this reluctance is the task of conversion.

It is not a matter of becoming, artificially, the enthusiast I am not; rather it is a matter for sitting with my reluctance, my resistance, and seeing it for what it is. Benedict calls this a trial or humiliation, and so it is—in the sense that it is a facing of the truth about ourselves. Honesty,— above all, honesty with ourselves — is the fundamental tool.” (Barrett, p.18)

It is in returning to that fundamental state of emptiness and helplessness before God that is the real starting point in our journey with God. This is what Jesus meant when He said, “unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 2:3-4)

We cannot move on in our journey of faith if we believe that our way is better, that we know better than God. It is uncomfortable to acknowledge that. It is uncomfortable to begin to peel away the layers of the defences that we hide behind, and may have hidden behind for years, and step out naked and vulnerable before God. Like Adam and Eve we want to cover ourselves, to hide the shame we have for not being faithful to God.

Brother Mark again:

“To encounter the God, I begin to realise I do not know, I must be prepared to go beyond the contexts with which I am uncomfortable, and risk encountering the aspects of myself that make me uncomfortable.

I must go into the desert … The desert is the landscape of testing, but also of being lost. The desert is the threshold beyond the settled land … The Christian and Jewish traditions are replete with the significance of the empty place for our encounter with God.”

Lent can be that desert; if we allow God to encounter us there. I was never going to achieve what God wanted from my life if I tried to do it on my own. Which is what I was attempting to do in the mill.

I had the arrogance to believe that I knew better than God, that I knew what was best for me, rather than simply trusting that God had a purpose for me being there.

Desert Fathers

There is a story from the Desert Fathers (Egyptian monks of the fourth century) that illustrates this point:

It was the custom for the newcomer to the monastery to ask a senior [monk] for a word to live by … [that is] somewhere between a rule of life and spiritual guidance. One such word left a certain determined newcomer dissatisfied.

Anxious to live the life of the Spirit to the full, he had been advised by an elder to sit in his cell, to pray at dawn and to pray at dusk. Feeling that there must be more to it than this, he sought better advice from a second elder.

But this time he was told to pray only once, and otherwise to keep to his cell. Now thoroughly discontented, the young man sought out a third elder.

‘Sit in your cell,’ the old man told him, ‘and your cell will teach you everything’.

The young man clearly thinks he already knows the way; hence his search for someone who will tell him what he wants to hear rather than what he needs to hear. He has heard the call to conversion and wants to respond. He sets out on the way.

[But] the great thing that can go wrong at the point he has reached is that, having gone far enough to realise the beginning of the truth about himself, he snaps to attention, dusts himself down and sets about eliminating the problem
[rather than simply offering that to God: sitting with the uncomfortable knowledge of who he really is and offering himself to God.]

… ‘If you see a young man ascending to heaven by his own will, pull him down again’, said the Desert Fathers. To move forward wilfully is simply to dig ourselves further into the pit …

The Desert Fathers knew that the first step on the path to repentance is to face the difficulty of actually being aware of one’s lostness, accepting the reality of the emptiness within [and facing the truth of our helplessness].
(Barrett, pp.19-20)

Psalm 63

The Psalm for today begins

O God, you are my God;
eagerly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you,
my flesh faints for you,
as in a barren and dry land where there is no water;

For some today that may be true. For others it may be closer to say: “O God, you are my God; eagerly I want to want to seek you”.


Perhaps this Lent is, for you, a time for taking stock; a time for being at times, perhaps, painfully honest with God about who and where we are in our lives. If it is, then be encouraged that you are not alone in the desert.

Jesus doesn’t wait for us to get ready for Him, He comes first to us and draws us to Himself just as we are. It is only then, in attentive awareness and praise of God that we are transformed—not when we are trying to change ourselves, but when we allow God in to every area of our lives, and simply be before God.

“O God, you are my God; eagerly I want to want to seek you”.
