New domain

How satisfying to finally get my new website up and running. In the end I did go for the upgrade to Host Europe’s WebFusion Home package (1.5 GB webspace, 10 GB monthly bandwidth, 500 POP3 email boxes, 150 subdomains, PHP4, MySQL, and a whole lot more) and all for £99 p.a.

There was a little DNS-panic over the weekend while my domain name register 123-reg upgraded a DNS name server and my DNS listing reverted to an old entry. Result: my domain name didn’t point to my new webspace.

With everything back up and running smoothly I have been able to try my hand at writing a couple of .htaccess files that tell the servers where pages have moved to (Redirect Permanent is a 301 code; did you know that? I learned that yesterday.) and define the location of 404 Page Not Found errors and the like. Hopefully that’ll help direct users to my new site.

Alt-code Top Ten

In a conversation on MSN Messenger the other day with Silver Joinee (and Friend) James Frost I expressed my like for Windows ALT-codes. You know! The codes you have to enter by holding down the left-hand Alt key and tapping a four-digit number on the number-pad (remembering to have activated number lock first). Yes! that old chestnut.

Here’s my top ten favourite Alt Codes:

1. Alt+0151 Em-dash —
2. Alt+0153 Trademark ™
3. Alt+0169 Copyright ©
4. Alt+0240 Eth ð
5. Alt+0254 Thorn þ
6. Alt+0186 Degrees º
7. Alt+0133 Ellipsis …
8. Alt+152 Tilde ˜
9. Alt+0167 Section Marker §
10. Alt+0182 Paragraph ¶

So now you know!

New web host?

I am seriously considering upgrading to a new web host. This would offer me more webspace and bandwidth, as well as more complex website capabilities, e.g. PHP, MySQL, CGI, etc. I am currently looking at www.webfusion.co.uk whose WebFusion Home package offers a whopping 1.5 GB webspace and a 10GB monthly bandwidth allowance, and all for under £100 p.a.

Heaven and Hell patch

www.heavengame.de/

It’s nice when software companies listen to their customers. I, and a thousand other Heaven & Hell players have been complaining about bugs in the game, that cause it to hang rather unceremoniously. What is the problem? graphics card, mouse driver, soundcard? Who knows! CDV have now released a patch, which will hopefully sort these problems.

I am a little nervous to try it again (I don’t like crashes, except in Colin McRae Rally 2.0) but will report how I get on.

Mouse & Keyboard in XP

Here’s a curious thing. My new XP system kept hanging recently, and culprit each time (when it wasn’t the annoying Debuglog.log) was Point32.exe. That’s my mouse! So I checked out Microsoft’s Mouse & Keyboard website and discovered that I should be using Intellipoint 5.0 for XP, rather than the 4.1 installed. Let’s hope things are a little more stable now. Microsoft must be fed up of my almost constant stream of automated crash reports.
