On Friday evening, fresh from a difficult conversation with someone, I thought I would kick my feet up and relax with a quick scroll through social media. Only to be presented with wall-to-wall coverage of the current US president and his stooges attacking the Ukranian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a press conference in the Oval Office.
It is an understatement to say that I was shocked and disappointed. I felt angry for President Zelenskyy.
I was listening to a The Rest is Politics podcast this morning about it. Someone pointed out that Trump just wants ratings and chaos, because that’s what keeps him in the media’s focus. Which may be good for an episode of The Apprentice, but it is terrible for global diplomacy and peace.
I received this in an email newsletter this week: “What works gets ignored; what fails gets attention.” Is it a coincidence that Trump’s administration gets so much attention?
That the United States official foreign policy appears to have spun on a sixpence within 6 weeks to ally themselves with Russia, putting them in conflict with Nato and the rest of the democratic West is outrageous and deeply sad.
One commentator on TV said the other day, Trump is a narcissistic sociopath. And another said that JD Vance is “a vile human being”. And that Oval Office ambush on Volodymyr Zelenskyy demonstrated that perfectly.
I pray for peace in Ukraine and across the rest of Europe. I pray for wisdom and courage as many people in the US stand up against Trump and his fascist regime. I pray that the constitution and the current systematic checks and balances in US legislation are strong enough to resist this dangeous and shocking turn towards far right positions and fascist, authoritarian and dictatorial behaviour.
