30 day challenge day 13: A song that is a guilty pleasure
This single came out in 1993 and reached #42 in the UK. The artist is Efua Baker (her first name is pronounced Ef-wah).
I feel like I’m in some kind of support group writing this.
“Hello, my name is Gareth and I own Efua—Somewhere on cassingle.”
I own this song on cassingle (remember those: cassette singles?). I own it not because I bought it but because our local record store—Borderline, I think it was called, in Galashiels—had a habit of giving away reasonably out-of-date singles for free when you bought a full-price album.
I picked up quite a few cassingles that way, including Efua—Down is the Drop and The Beautiful South—36D.
And, I have to say, I really like it. It’s definitely my guilty pleasure. A song so out of character for me.
I like it in part because it brings back happy memories of my final year at university; partly because it’s just fun and silly; and partly because I just really, really love her voice.
