I received this postcard in the mail yesterday. I’m now trying to decide whether I could hang it over the baptistry at church. On the back was a simple message:
Gareth,
Thought this might amuse you!
love Hedge x
It did. Thanks, Hedge!
I’m quite picky about my fonts, and about design in general. One of the best (and most accessible) books I’ve ever read on design for DTP publications is The Non-Designer’s Design Book (Second Edition): Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice by Robin Williams (No, not that one!).
The book is easy to read, easy to understand, and the principles contained in it easy to apply. Williams boils down good design to four main principles, which have the memorable acronym CRAP:
- Contrast
- Repetition
- Alignment
- Proximity
It’s a great book: I thoroughly recommend it.
And for all you font anoraks out there, the font used on the postcard looks like “Elementary Bold”.
I’ve just discovered that the author of The Non-Designer’s Design Book, Robin Williams, has “always wanted to be a mermaid“.
I tried identifying the font with Identifont (http://www.identifont.com), but sadly it couldn’t get it because there weren’t enough characters in the sample to base a guess on. If ever you do need to identify a font, though, Identifont is worth a try!
Fame at last! I feel so honoured…
I sooooo jealous Hedge… 😛
Hiya Gareth!
