Powerpoint band

Once a month — on the second Friday of each month, since you were asking — I play in a band at a Christian youth event called Powerpoint. The band is led by my brother, Eddie, and yes it probably is through a bit of nepotism that I’m playing electric guitar in the band, but that’s not important right now.

The event is for secondary school age young people and regularly draws youngsters from across Edinburgh and as far as Fife and the Borders. There were around 220 young people there this evening, which was so encouraging.

This evening the band sounded wonderful: we listened to one another, we played off one another, we gave space to one another. There was also such a sense of worship and the presence of God there that it really moved me. We weren’t performing, we were worshipping and that made such a difference. What a priviledge to be part of that event. I feel energized and inspired.

The highlight of the worship ‘set’: There is Power in the Name of Jesus, which we began with the theme from the movie Rocky, which then moved effortlessly to the theme from Magnum PI. If we were to name the band I’d want us to be called The TV Evangelists, for our ability to weave TV and film themes into standard worship songs, or The All-Delta Prophets just because I think that nonsense name sounds cool.

Scared of Santa

Each Friday the kind people at B3ta towers send me an email full of irreverent nonsense created by people like you and me. Today they drew readers’ attention to the Scared of Santa photo gallery.

These are my three favourites, in reverse order, with comments by me:

#3. This, I reckon, is where the inspiration for the Blair Witch Project came from. How, in the name of the wee man, did the girl in the middle get her hood so pointy?! I suspect, thinking about it, it’s just that her hair is standing on end.

#2. I swear the girl on the right is a young Mrs Doyle, from Fr Ted, and I love the expression on the face of the poor boy in the middle.

#1. I reckon it was Santa’s robotic hand dropping off that scared this poor kid the most.
