I helped my brother, Eddie, move house today, from South Gyle to South Queensferry. It’s a long story but after a nerve-wracking few months waiting Eddie and Rebecca finally managed to sell their flat in South Gyle — the first buyer pulled out the day before the missives were to be exchanged, and the second buyer had problems sorting out his mortgage, so much so that Ed and Bec will have a week’s bridging loan to pay. But it could have been worse, much worse.
I pulled up outside their flat at 10:20 and we had their hired Luton van filled three hours later, and were heading towards the Forth Road Bridge. We enjoyed the Shell petrol station’s finest sandwiches for lunch and then the hard work of emptying the van before Eddie and Rebecca zoomed off to pick up a fridge and cooker while Jane and I cleared up their living room, which was still in the midst of being decorated, and sanded toy soldier stensils from what will now be their bedroom.
It was nice to help my brother out, and to do some manual labour. But I’m not half exhausted!
