My Favourite 3mx Applications
There are a few applications which I always carry around with me on
my Psion 3mx. Applications which make work a bit easier, or relieve
the potential tedium of a long journey.
Utilities
Charm
v.2.0
Character Map
by Tom Dolbilin, 1993-94
Series 3a, 3c, 3mx -- Freeware
Download (2.92 Kb)
A charming name for a simple application. Think: Character Map.
Does your Word document need a ©, é, or ð and you have
forgotten that these are obtained with Ctrl+184, Ctrl+4 then e, and
Ctrl+208 -- then you need Charm.
Simply select the character you need from the table, switch to Word
(or Data, or Jotter, or whatever) and Psion+B to 'bring' the character.

Zcomp
v.1.1
Compression Tool
by Z. Freeman
Siena, Series 3a, 3c, 3mx -- Shareware
Download (4.58 Kb)
I don't use this terribly much now that I have 4 Mb to play with on
my 3mx (with two SDDs), but when I was using my Siena 512 Kb it was
useful.
It's a bit like WinZip but for the Psion.

Graphics, fonts and icons
Browse v.1.01
.pic browser
by Thomas Wright
Series 3a, 3c, 3mx -- Freeware
Download (7.87 Kb)
"Browse shows all the pictures in a directory as thumbnails (48x48
pixels in size). It can also show the pictures full size, even if they
are bigger than the screen and it allows you to copy, move, delete and
rename the files."

Eikon
v.0.94
Icon editor
by Roger Burton-West
Series 3a, 3c, 3mx -- Freeware
Download (12.3 Kb)
EIKON is an icon editor for the Psion S3a. It is supplied as OPL source
code, though a translated application is also included.
Unlike most icon editors, EIKON does not deal with the grey plane as
a separate entity; rather, the current painting colour is always one
of White, Grey or Black.

Developer's Website | Download
(14.7 Kb)
Create or edit fonts for your own programs, or other applications.
I used this application to create the Chess fonts for Johan Van Barel's
chess game (see below).

RevTran
v.6.4
Reverse Translator
by Mike Rudin
(Siena), Series 3a, 3c, 3mx, Series 5, 5mx -- Freeware
Developer's Website
& Download (66 Kb)
Steve Litchfield's
article
"Revtran is a program for Psion handheld computers, which reverse-translates
translated programs back into moderately intelligible OPL source code."
It is handy if you lose the original source code of an application you
are writing. (Why didn't I backup more often?!)
Reverse-translation translates compiled OPA and APP files back into
editable OPL code files, which allows you to find out how a programmer
did something. When Mike Rudin says "moderately intelligible OPL source
code" he is speaking about certain variables which are rendered e.g.
pr1z%, pr2z%, pr3z%, etc.
Not all OPAs or APPs are reverse-translatable. You can write code which
will cause RevTran to fail.
"It is written in OPL, and will run on the Series 3/3a/3c/3mx/5/5mx,
and the Workabout. Not the Siena [though I did get previous versions
to run on my Siena -- albeit that it cut-off part of the screen!). Revtran
processes Series 3/3a, Workabout, HC, MC (all OPL16) and Series 5/5mx
(OPL32) OPL programs."

Games
Chess
v.2.0
Rather good chess game
by Johan Van Barel
Siena, Series 3a, 3c, 3mx
Website | Extra
chess sets (2 Kb)
A rather good implementation of chess. There is a limited-move version
(v.1.2) available for download on Johan's website (it exits after 20
moves).
Registration is very reasonable: £5 / €10.
I have designed my own chess sets (actually Psion fonts) which you
are free to download
(2 Kb), use and adapt using FontEditor
1.37 (above).

JongJong
v.1.13
Mah Jong -- Game of Four Winds
by Onflo Software, Hong Kong
Siena; Series 3a, 3c/3mx; Series 5/5mx
Commerical US$20
Developer's
Website
Unfortunately, this version doesn't offer the full Mah Jong experience
and takes up alot of memory, but it's enjoyable none-the-less.
Features include:
- Only a two-player game is offered: player vs. Psion.
- Chinese, Japanese or English speech.
- Easy, Normal or Hard levels.
- Only plays until you lose.
- Tiles do not have Western numbers on them -- so learn your MJ tiles!
There is a crack available for this title... somewhere on Usenet!

Tilefall
v.1.5
Column game
by Adam Dawes
Download (26.3 Kb)
"Tile Fall is a deceptively simple game. It looks so simplistic, yet
after playing it for a while you'll find that there's more to it than
meets the eye. It's also worryingly addictive [...to which my wife Jane
will testify!]
"It has vague similarities with the classic game Tetris, but is more
of a challenge to the mind than a test of reactions. The best way to
see what the game is about is simply to play it -- but make sure you
have plenty of time to spare!"

Mah Jong on the Psion
You can play Mah Jong on the Psion. There are versions for both SIBO
and EPOC machines. There is also a Scoring program.
You can read a little more about these on my Psion
Mah Jong software page.
