I back up and then clear the Windows\VCM (Version Conflict Manager) folder. 2. I run System File Checker (SFC.EXE), set options to check for deleted and changed files, then run it and simply update. 3. After reinstalling, I run VCM, reviewing to see if I want to restore any overwritten files. Understand, it depends very much on what your reasons for performing the procedure were as to whether or not you actually should restore the newer files. I finish by running SFC, ignoring reports of "corruption" which are likely erroneous, and referring to http://support.microsoft.com/servicedesks/fileversion/dllinfo.asp to determine where a missing file may have originally come from. All of these steps are for more advanced users. It can be difficult to tell where a file came from. And in many cases, it is wiser to reinstall the entire set of files than to simply restore individual files. So, what Gary says is still the best advice, and I'll only add that if you have an upgraded or updated version of Internet Explorer, you would be wise to reinstall it, also, and even uninstall it before reinstalling Windows in the first place. source: windows98 general discussion newsgroup
