========================= PWS 4.0 Start-up Problems ========================= Summary: I am having problems with PWS 4.0: it sometimes runs at start-up (i.e. PWS is running and started allowing connection to your local website AND the pwstray.exe icon is in the system tray) and sometimes it doesn't (i.e. PWS is not running and there is NO pwstray.exe icon in the system tray). What do I do to fix this? NOTE: This file refers to the version of PWS 4.0 which is supplied on the Windows 98 SE CD-ROM. It *may* also apply to other versions of PWS but I CANNOT guarantee (or test) that. Solutions: I have trawled the internet for an answer to this problem. There seem to be a number of *solutions*, the bottom line, however, being that PWS 4.0 has its faults, and this is one of them. (1) Conflicting application at start-up Someone suggested that it may be due to a conflicting application also running at start-up and suggested systematically checking through your start-up files in MSCONFIG (START | Run; type MSCONFIG; click OK) (2) OLE older version Another suggestion was that it was due to a problem with an older OLE file having been installed by another program. The solution was to REINSTALL PWS 4.0. (3) Registry Tweaks Shane Fowlkes in the newsgroup news:microsoft.public.frontpage.client in 1999 suggested the following: "speaking from much (unfortuante) experience here...Assuming you're using PWS4, sometimes it just quits working/launching, no matter how many times you reinstall it. To make it start "again", there are 2 fixes: (A) Edit your Registry (at your own risk): The MTS installation put in a registry entry into hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\ windows\currentversion\runservices: mstdc with a value of "msdtcw -start". I changed it to "msdtcw.EXE -start". Now MTS starts just fine NOTE: There was a comment elsewhere that MS-DTC is not necessary for Windows 9x machines and that disabling it completely in MSCONFIG will have no knock-on effects for either Windows 98 or PWS 4.0. (B) Create a Shortcut: If you make a shortcut out of pws.exe and changes it's properties so that the command line is pws.exe /start and then put the shortcut in your startup directory it should start every time you start/restart your computer." ======================================================== Written by Gareth J M Saunders, Thursday 24 January 2002 gareth@garethjmsaunders.co.uk http://www.garethjmsaunders.co.uk
