Mah Jong accessories

Besides Mah Jong sets we have the following:

Tile Racks

Four Gibson racks. Three are made from a light-coloured wood, the fourth has been stained a Mahogany colour. This - obviously - is to distinguish who is East (or Chief). View pictures (13 Kb)

Scoring Sticks

We now have three sets of scoring sticks (or 'bones').

  1. The first set was very kindly sent to me by Martin Rep (5 Kb) as we didn't have any at the time.
  2. The second came as part of Jane's set (35 Kb)
  3. and the third in Gareth's Set #2 (10 Kb).

Mah Jong cards (standard)

Jane and I, now have four sets of standard-size Mah Jong cards:

Mhing®

Mhing is a Mah Jong style game manufactured by Suntex International Inc. and which was licensed to Spear's Games in the UK in the 1980s. As far as I am aware it is only available in the UK from SummuS Limited (see Mah Jong Cards or FAQ #07 for details), and secondhand on an auction site such as eBay UK or Amazon UK.

The Mhing deck has 150 cards: 108 Suit cards, 28 Honor cards, 8 Flower cards and 6 Wild cards.

Only the player who goes Mhing scores points. Credits are awarded for combinations, credits are then converted into points, the highest score being 41 credits or 131,072 points.

Mah Jong Playing Cards

We bought these cards by mail order from R.Somerville in France (see MJ Cards for details). These are like standard playing cards only slightly narrower.

There are 144 cards including 4 Seasons and 4 Flowers, plus an extra 4 Wild Cards.

Mahjong Panda Card

These were kindly gifted to me by the Mahjong Museum (1-2, Nakahara, Misaki-cho, Isumigun, Chiba Pref. 299-4502, Japan).

This is quite a cute set with a clear Panda theme. The only suit without Pandas is the Winds, and Dragons are, of course, replaced with... you've guessed, Pandas.

The set consists of 144 cards including 4 Red Wild Cards and 4 Seasons

The "How to Play..." sheet (in Japanese and English) offers rules for "the Panda Game", "Mahjong", "Panda Mahjong" and "Card Games".

KR - Eagle

I bought these cards while in China Town, San Francisco in 2002. They are about 1/5 thinner than standard playing cards and bear no Western characters.

The information card says "KR Playing Cards are new Series Products of Super quality, Produced on the basic EAGLE Playing Cards of WaiYip Printing Factory (HONG KONG)."

The set consists of 144 cards, including 4 flowers and 4 seasons. There are no extra or wild cards.

Hong Kong Cultural Services (Unmarked)

I bought these cards (for £3.20) in China Town in London during a visit in July 2001. They are very similar to the Effect cards (above) but are printed on better quality card and come in a plastic box.
